If you’ve looked at any of my Photos from the Florida Wetlands this year you’ve got a good sense of what a great lens the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II is.
I love it. I miss the pump zoom of the original and it’s awkward to hold without unintentionally changing the zoom or focus but everything else is excellent.
This weekend, I got to try it’s “close up” capabilities and again I am in awe of this lens. Super close minimum focus distance of just over 3′, a maximum magnification of .31X, 4 stops of image stabilization makes close up photography an absolute dream. And the compression of a 400mm lens yields the best background OOF I’ve ever seen. In fact, 1 of the shots below was at f/20 and I challenge you to pick it out from those at f/5.6, f/8 or f/11. The background is not going to give it away.
