Big City Adventure

Brody made his first trip to the big city of downtown Chicago this weekend.   Sure, he’s been in the fringes before, Lakeshore Dr, University of Chicago, etc., but we’re talking Magnificent Mile here!

Chiicago River Walk

The initial shock to his sensibilities was not pleasant for him.   It began with the noise of the city.    Something we take for granted, must have been deafening to the long-eared pup.   Aside from the constant dim of car and train traffic, every creak, bang and boom initially startled Brody.   The worst was being on the bridges or under the L.    Every passing vehicle rattled and shook the platform he was standing on.   Never the less, he prevailed and as time wore on, he became accustomed.

This ended up being a two-day trip.   Saturday, just around dawn it began drizzling, but by then we were already in the city.   For the most part, we took refuge under the overhangs along the Chicago Riverwalk.   The location and rain limited our photographic opportunities.
Chained DownTied Up

Everyone loves to shoot photos of the twin Marina Towers (“Marina City”).   Search the internet and discover tons of photos of them. It’s one of those Chicago icons.   I, on the other hand, was more impressed by the vast emptiness of the spiral car case.   It reminded me of a parity on Where’s Waldo.   It even reminded me of the Three Dog Night song “One is the Loneliest Number”.

Wheres Waldo

Or maybe, since the towers sit in front of the House Of Blues, this scene might remind you of the Blues Song by Sonny Boy Williamson; “One Way Out” I’m just Sayin…

The last shot from Saturday was taken from the Riverwalk nearest State St.

Ledge Walker

I’ve owned 3 beagles in my life. They’ve all had their individual personalities and quirks that made them special. But, one thing has been a constant characteristic among them. They have all been Ledge Walkers.

Hound Update

It’s been a couple of weeks since the last Adventures of Brody update so I figured some folks may be wondering what he’s been up to.

Besides trying to see what’s outside the picture frame that is……

Peaking Over the Edge

He’s actually been a pretty busy boy he just hasn’t been in front of the camera. Since our last update he’s been to the University of Chicago, he’s been to Point Park and Lake Michigan and he’s been out in the fields chasing birds every night.

But, when it’s all said and done this is still one of his favorite things to do.

Dog Day Afternoon

It occurred to me that almost every photo I have of Brody playing ball is either his backside chasing the ball or of him retrieving the ball.

Sunday Playtime

Well, I have remote triggers so I figured it was time to put them to use and get some frontal pursuit shots.
With the incredible width and depth of field you get with a 24mm ts-e it makes it pretty easy.
Something I’m going to have to experiment with more. Thanks for looking.

Sight in Motion “Grande Disco”

Prologue: Chris Smith from Out of Chicago turned me onto this sculpture. Please check out his work. Nobody knows this city, photographically like Chris, except maybe the guys he hangs out with. Right Matt/Brian?
_________

The Grande Disco Sculpture in front of the Medical School at the University of Chicago is a photographers honey hole, offering shot opportunities from every angle.

Actually, that’s not far from the Creator’s vision for this piece of art, as I will discuss in this post.

Grande Disco

Arnaldo Pomodoro is an Italian sculptor. He was born on 23 June 1926, in Morciano, Romagna, Italy. He currently lives and works in Milan.

It turns out that there are 6 of these sculptures around the world.
1) … This one at the University of Chicago.
2) … Piazza Medical Building, Bana Populare, Milan
3) … Donald Kendall Gardens, Pepsico Hdq. Purchase, NY
4) … Theatro Strehler, Milan
5) … Bofa Plaza, Charlotte NC
6) … Georg Buchner Monument, Darnstadt, Germany

Ok, to the point ….

The plague in front of one of these sculptures reads in part; “Grande Disco – The social challenge of art today, in my opinion, is to start a dialogue with the people. I hope that is what happens here with The Grande/Disco.”

Certainly I think he accomplished his vision with this piece. I can’t imagine any two people looking at this without breaking into some sort of conversation. Is it “The Death Star?” “Who would dream something like this up?” “Why or “What the (add your own noun or euphemism)?” Clearly, it evokes the motion of dialogue its creator desired.

But, it creates a motion of another sort. Physical motion.

Grande Disco

Every angle and point of view offers new textures and lines and shapes to explore. As a photographer (especially as one who began in the macro genre) I could spend hours examining and photographing the bits and pieces of this work of Art.

Arnaldo Pomodoro’s Grande Disco sculpture

Grande Disco offers thousands of shot opportunities and I can only imagine that number increases exponentially every time the light changes.

Take this one, for example …

Grande Disco

How many “faces” or other little treats did our friend Arnaldo include in this piece.

Oh by the way, along with the physical workout, I repeatedly engaged in dialogue. “Hey Chris, did you see this?” was spoken often.

Mission Accomplished Mr. Pomodoro.

Here are a few other sampling s of what I saw…

Leading Lines

Grande Disco

It’s like a small futuristic city, with highways running at every angle towards the high-rises and other corporate structures.

Grande Disco

Add contrast and color and go slightly tighter with the lens and more of a Machine like view appears.

Grande Disco

Anyway, that’s what I was thinking. Thanks for Looking.

Times are Changing

Brody got this stuffed toy for Easter.

Times are Changing

It’s been a week and he hasn’t destroyed it yet. Heck, he hasn’t even chewed off the ears or tail!

Times are a Changing.
Thanks for Looking.

Trip Home

Had an opportunity to go home this weekend. Gave me a chance to capture the city in morning light and more importantly, Brody got to spend a couple of days with his best friend, Lexie.

First the city …

Everyone hopes for a great sunrise but, I loved the blue color of the sky and river at dawn.

Morning Blues

These were taken on subsequent days and it’s a good thing the predawn and dawn light were strong because clouds prevented an actual sunrise on both days.

Pittsburgh at Predawn

I shot this scene in Black-n-White a year or two ago and liked it. This time I wanted to see what a full-blown HDR might look like. Doesn’t usually go All Painterly in my HDR’s but I liked the effect in this scene. I think the clouds are over-processed but I like the rest of the image. Maybe Warner Bros. could use it in a poster for “The Dark Knight Rises”

City of Bridges

Now onto the main event.
You’d think after a year these 2 would be wrestled weary…

Wrestle Mania

In between wrestling moves they always find time to hug and kiss.

Wrestle Mania 2

Just about the time you think they’ve settled down, you notice that Lexie has Brody’s toy between her paws and he’s just eyeballing it, waiting for the opportune moment to grab it and run

Taking a Break - Ya Right

Now Brody likes to fetch, but when Lexie is around he’s puts extra zip in his step for fear she grabs it away from him

Flying to the Ring

When one gets tired, the other starts harassment tactics and pretty soon the race is on again.

Harassment

These two cause so much chaos that pretty soon the neighbors show up to see what the heck is going on.

Meet the Neighbors

As a side trip, Brody and I made a quick trip to Ohiopyle. It was great to see Cucumber Falls flowing at full steam.

Cucumber Falls Spring 2012

The bonus was that the red and white Trillium’s were in bloom. Wasn’t really in wildflower mode but they are a pretty flower never-the-less. Ok, that’s the photo side of my trip home, I won’t bore you with the getting taxes done, etc. part of the trip. Thanks for looking.

It’s Not An Obsession – Really

By now, some people have to believe I have an obsession with taking photos of Brody.
I don’t, really. Ok, so according to my computer, I have 2,049 photos of Brody on file. That’s only, roughly 5 a day since he’s been born.
And, if it was a real obsession, I would have processed all of them, not just that paltry 750 that I’ve developed.
And, in the same time period, I’ve shot a lot of photos that aren’t of Brody, which brings me to my point.

Photography is a great hobby for me. I find beauty in the world that I used to take for granted.

I now pay attention and see details, like the golden hue on a pond from the reflections of reeds against a setting sun.

I’m not artistic by nature but photography nurtures artistic thoughts.

Brody needs to take walks. I’m in charge of those walks.
It’s very simple, Brody and a camera. Never leave home without them. How many times have we all said, “The things you see when you don’t have a camera!” Well that doesn’t happen to me very often any more.

Plus, he’s an easy subject when nothing else is going on. Plus, the antics he does are just too damn cute to not capture and share. Like the thing he does with his frisbee…

The first time he came running with the Frisbee wrapped around his head I thought it was the only way he could carry it and still see where he was going.
Now I’m pretty sure he does it just for fun.

I’ve watched him wrangle this thing and flip it around until he got it over this head.

Anyway, that’s my story and I’m stickin to it. Thanks for Looking.

Brody’s First Real Bath

Normally when Brody gets dirty he’s get a shower. I have a long hose that makes it easy, and he seems to tolerate it pretty well. But, I needed a photo of a “Bath” for a project I was working on and suggested to Brody it might be time to take a real bath.

He was most curious about the Mr. Bubbles bottle and the water running in the tub, especially since he’s never seen either. Continue reading

The Adventures of Brody expanded today when he did his first ever “Wild Goose Chase”

As we’re taking our Sunday stroll across the field I see this scene and I’m thinking “Really Brody – Really”

LightRoom 4 – Raw Conversion

First, my disclaimer. I am not a software engineer or a graphics application power user. I am a simple amateur photographer that had a question, set about to generate an answer, made an observation and am sharing it for what it’s worth.

This is also not a review for Light Room 4, there are plenty of those and they are easy to find. So, if I didn’t lose you yet, read on…

I’ve been taking a serious quantity of photographs over the last 5 years and don’t have a particularly simple or concise way of managing them. There are a number of great tools for this on the market, just never invested the time or money.

Because I’ve started becoming active in Flickr and Google+, as soon as Light Room 4 hit the market there was a tremendous amount of chatter about the improvements. So, I decided to download the trial version for a test drive. The application overall is impressive, but for a guy whose lived with simple tools, there is a pretty big learning curve.

So, the first question, is the gain worth the learning pain to me. (The operative words are “to me” as Adobefites will argue the affirmative).

Frankly, I’ve been leaning towards the “No” answer. Any software that warrants the generation of thousands of learning books, videos, seminars and its own convention is probably more difficult or robust than I need.

But, then I happen to compare the output of 2 files converted from RAW. One processed in DXO Optics and the other from Light Room. I was impressed.

DXO has been my definitive standard for RAW processing but now I am not so sure.
So, for the use and interest of others and to preserve my results, I thought I’d post comparative samples of 3 RAW converters.

DXO Optics, Light Room and Canon’s own DPP.
Note, my comments are my opinion, if you want science, go find a scientist.

All the samples started off in 800x format. The crops are 100%. Click on the images to bring up the larger view. All of the images are processed in their default settings.

DXO has some advantage here in that by default it applies varying amounts of sharpening, lens correction and noise reduction. (Based on the camera model and lens used not the image content. The initiated should really go read about the science in DXO Optics it’s pretty cool.)

I have also broken this post down into pages so that I could use larger images and be verbose about my observations on each. Click on the page number below this post to continue.
